The Tino Rangatiratanga flag was designed in 1989 by Hiraina Marsden, Jan Smith, and Linda Munn as a symbol of Māori sovereignty and self-determination. The design, chosen through a national competition, features black, white, and red elements representing Te Kore, Te Ao Mārama and Papatūānuku. It has since become a powerful emblem for Māori rights movements and is officially recognized as the national Māori flag of Aotearoa New Zealand.
